The Sierra Club's mission is to explore, enjoy and protect the planet. Practice and promote the responsible use of resources, educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the environment and to use all lawful means in accomplishing the objectives.
Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. The Sierra Club is one of the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the United States. The founder John Muir appears on the back of the California quarter.
